How to Sketch a Website Layout

How to Sketch a Website Layout

There’s something to say about being creative using pen and paper first.  I don’t know if it’s because you have more control and the movement of your hand gets the creative juices flowing.

In this video tutorial, peek over my shoulder and learn how to sketch a website layout that you can use for a one-page website, landing page, or sales page.  Then you’ll see a webpage that I created based on the sketch.

You’ll also get a mini crash-course on the PAS method of copywriting which is the method I’m using to create this landing page.

If you’re in the planning stages of creating your first webpage, landing page or sales page, give this technique a try and put what you’ve learned into practice.

Take a picture of your sketch and post it on Pinterest. Don’t forget to tag @giselejgrenier so I can take a look at it.

I hope you found this helpful and I look forward to hearing from you.

Until next time, Stay Inspired.

So in this video, you’re going to learn how to plan a layout for a single-page website. Now, why a single-page website?

It’s helpful because you can use them as landing pages to focus on one product or if you’re just starting out or you may not have a product or service to sell yet. It’s a great way to get yourself online without going through the expense or the time to get a full website designed because it’s better to focus on one quality page versus a website with five or six pages that really don’t have anything to say.

So we’re going to focus on quality. So the way we’re going to plan out this landing page or this whole page, ,we’re going to do it on the whiteboard, and I’ve got on paper, but you won’t be able to see it. I want to go over the method that I’m using for this landing page is called the problem agitation, solution. So you’re going to identify a problem. You’re going to agitated a bit and then you’re going to provide a solution.

What does that look like for you? Well, let’s say you’re a chef and you’re putting together a recipe book for single moms who have high anxiety.

So one of the things that, you know, moms that have high anxiety may be facing is putting together healthy meals, running out of time, always running around while you’re so let’s say your cookbook solves that stuff. So the problem is going to be you’re going to address quick and easy meals that can be made in the, say, under five minutes then or 10 minutes or 15. Then the agitation is going to be, you know, are you sick and tired of serving your your your family?

I don’t know, frozen foods because you don’t have any time to spend on cooking a meal, that kind of thing, that the solution will be basically your cookbook or let’s say your blog if you don’t have a cookbook, ready for sale, your blog.

OK, so let’s take another one.

OK, let’s take something that happened to me last week, my computer that I used for prepare my videos when it went bye bye.

So I had to find something that was going to be just as good that I wanted to make it portable because a computer that I was using for my video editing was this monster monster computer.

Well, if I’m going to be traveling when the pandemic is over, when I’m going be traveling, I don’t can’t lug that around.

And the laptop that I already have isn’t strong enough. So I had to look for a high end laptop that would do what I needed to do. OK, so that was my problem, finding a laptop that would run my videos where I can create my websites and all that stuff, I also had to make sure, OK, I have to be able to hook multiple monitors onto this laptop. Yeah.

So I had to be high def and all that stuff. OK, so a website landing page could be getting in there about, you know, the struggles of technology. My original background is computer programming, but after 25 years, I mean, when I graduated school that I was already obsolete. So a lot of the stuff I don’t know a lot about. So I started going to some websites and a lot of the websites were focused on gaming and, you know, Mac problems and PC problems in that.

So. Well, I have a problem with this.

So I went to Amazon, which is where I always end up going to do some research, landed on a website. So and it was talking about, you know.

Try to find a laptop that’s not a Mac to do your videos, because I use Adobe Premiere Pro and I have to make sure that it was compatible, then there was a bit of an agitation there, you know?

You know, you don’t want to invest thousands of dollars in a Mac and you don’t want to invest thousands of dollars into hardware and you want to be able to upgrade your computer. But you can’t because what you bought wasn’t good, you know, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Then there was a solution. The solution was funny. The solution was for a YouTube video. But I ended up taking that and it changed the way that I did some research.

And with that, what I ended up with, I still made a mistake with it, there is no slot in it for the card that’s in the video camera that’s recording the SD card, there’s no slot in the laptop.

So then I have to go to Amazon to find what’s called a hub that would take all that stuff. And it’ll let me hook up another monitor so I’ll be able to have four so great solutions of all that stuff.

But I didn’t find any websites, so just give me the information that I want. So we’re going to do this in this video.

So I’ve got my whiteboard here and I’ve got some markers and basically the markers I have them are black, green, red, blue. Then orange, a lighter blue, purple and green. Doesn’t matter the colors, as long as you can differentiate a separate color for a button, a separate color for an accent, a separate color for your primary color doesn’t matter. Let’s get started first. We’re just laying out the page. So this is going to be a page.

But let’s just {sketching}. Pretty crooked paper right? Now you start off with the header, now the header. It’s also known as the Hero, headline, banner. Doesn’t matter what you call it, it’s the header, what you see at the top of the page. And typically that header is supposed to grab the attention of your website visitor under seven seconds because you don’t have a lot of time. They look there. If they’re not interested, they’re going to click back and go someplace else.

So a good way to put your header together, is to tell them exactly why they’re there, tell them who you are, what you do, and how you can serve them right away. That way they know they’re in the right place.

So we’re going to create a header here and you’re going to put a sub line. So this is going to be your statement.

Now, my statement is, well, I have a couple depending on who my ideal customers. But basically, I teach female solopreneurs how to build, grow and manage their website so they can get their products and services in front of the right audience. So I would put that there.

And then from here, you can put a little sentence. And then if you want to jump down to the next section, just put a button.

This is where I’m going to change the color so I can make this. A button and I was going to put an arrow. All right, well, that’s that’s. And then so that’s that section. So the next section is that we need to identify problems. OK, so what are three problems that your ideal customer could be facing? That way they’ll see their headline, who you are, what you do and how you serve them. Just below that.

Oh, OK. Well, yeah, that’s me. That’s me. That’s me.

I have this problem. I have this problem. Get them really interested. The goal with the website is to bring them down to each section of your page. You’re starting off where they may not know who you are, what you do, how you serve them. But by the time they get to the bottom of the page, they’re going to know, like, exactly what you do, like in full detail what you do and how you help their problems.

So let’s say we’re going to and this is just how I laid this one out. And I’m going to make a little circle here. And this is just visually, just a layout that you take and you put it into the tech, so this is going to be problem number one and this is going to be problem number two.

And this is going to be problem number three to try to make it in threes.

Visually, composition wise, threes are better, odd numbers, not one, two or just one. That center, that’s fine, but not two. Not four just trying to make it in odd numbers.

Now, what if you really don’t know yet what your problem is, then you need to go back to your ideal customer profile and I’ll link that in the description below. And you need to figure out who your ideal customer is and what problems are having. There’s no point in jumping into this without knowing who you’re serving first. OK, so make sure you go through that. You can also use your home page if you have more than one ideal customer.

So, for example, for It’s Just G, basically I teach female solopreneurs how to build and manage their website. Legacy Designs, which is the company I have with my husband.

We do that for people. It’s a one to one service, but there’s a certain type of ideal customer for there and then there’s a ideal customer for this.

So I could layout a different ideal customer so my ideal customer could be a, let’s say, a new business owner who’s just getting started, a business owner that’s been in business for, let’s say, under a year, or somebody who’s been in business for to five years. So I could identify different ideal customers. But for this landing page let’s just focus on the problems. So we got three problems, then with this.

Let’s put a picture in here and then we can put some text. This is going to be the agitation. OK, that’s going to be the agitation, this is going to re-emphasize these problems, I’m a new business owner and I need to get a website that I haven’t got a frickin’ clue what I’m doing.

I’m scared of the tech. Then what I can do is in here. So new business owners need a website. Don’t know what I’m doing. Afraid of tech. Then in here, I could put a picture of a female business owner who looks a little bit frustrated, who’s looking at a computer with a confused look on her face, something to kind of really emphasize.

And the person that’s looking at the website would say, yeah, that’s me, and you would just emphasize that problem. So you’ve just gone into business for yourself. You know, you need a website, but how do you get started if you haven’t got a clue what you’re doing? Do you hire out spent thousands of dollars running the risk that you don’t know what you’re going to get or do you try to build it yourself, that type of thing?

but they’ve identified themselves as one of the three problems, you’ve emphasized that problem. So you’re agitated a bit.

Now let’s get into the solution so we can come in here and we can make it as bullet points, try to make them as bullet points to create that nice white space. I don’t know if this is even.

OK, so that’s going to be your solution, so it could be something like learn to plan your website in seven days, how to Learn Tech the Easy Way, how to build your own website for under 50 dollars. You know, solutions for that. So they start off with a problem. And as you’re coming down, you’re providing the idea for the solution for them.

Then when they’re saying, yeah, I can learn that I have seven days, I can build a website without having to know all the tech. I can build a website without knowing programming. You know, I could build a website or web page in, you know, three hours.

Yeah, I want to learn how to do that.

The next part is your call to action. So we’re going to pretend here that with this is that I provide one on one training.

So with this here, I can build an Opt-in page for the first name email. And then I just got marker all over me. The button and then under there, a little sentence. I have to say, what they’re going what’s going to happen after the Opt-in for this? So it could be here, your Opt-in you want to build your mailing list? Could be.

Well, for how you probably got here was learn how to plan your website in 8 easy steps by taking my free mini course, just give me your first name, email and click the button.

Then the text here could say after you click submit, a confirmation is going to go to your email to make sure I’m sending this to the right email address, whatever, whatever that that tag line is.

But there’s a layout.

So there’s a layout for a very simple one page website to basically start building your authority, to teach people this is who I am, what I do and how I serve. These are the problems that you might be having. And you’re going to know these problems because you have an ideal customer profile you’re basing that on. You’re going to agitate that problem even more. Again, based on your ideal customer profile, you’re going to provide your solution. Then you’re going to tell these people, hey, I’ve got this, I’m going to give you for free, give me your contact info.

And that’s great. What if you want to put it a little bit more, let’s say you’re just really just starting out.

Well, you know what’s missing on here, who you are. So you can turn around and say, OK, this is where the whiteboard comes in.

You can turn around and say, well, let’s change this a little bit and I’m actually going to show you a sample of this one page, one page landing page, actually on the website. So you can turn around and then now without doing it on the whiteboard, you can actually just shift these around.

So in the training that I have is that it shows you if you create this and then you want to add something in here. Well, on the whiteboard, we have to erase it. But in reality, all we do is take that and drag it out. Just move it down to the next section just to swap the pieces out. So that’s how easy it is. So you can make a section now. For, let’s say, laying it out, we can actually just create a background image or we can put an image here, you know, we could put something here and then about, you could say, why work with me?

Why should you work with me?

You know, just basic a basic paragraph of how you can help this person.

And then you put the Opt-in here and make sure you put your buttons in a different color. And then we have our little statement, what’s going to happen after you click the submit button?

OK, so you can build that as basically as big as you want. Now, I want to show you a quick example of some layouts that I’ve done on paper.

So here’s some layouts and they’re all folded up because they’re massively long. So what I’ve done…It’s just a short one. I just take biner paper and put them together, that I taped them together to come up with a layout, that I take this layout and transform it into a landing page. So you can do it on paper.

You don’t have to get fancy.

You don’t need to do anything on, you know, Illustrator or Photoshop. You can use Canva. But, you know, to me, I really like doing it on paper. So here’s a really long one. OK, that’s a really, really long one, and you can use this as well for sales pages, regular landing pages, your one-page website.

You can, you know, use this for a product as well so you can layout the problem here, here, here. And you really should have an Opt-in to build a mailing list on your pages. But this could be “buy now”.

Take this course, contact me. So the very bottom is going to be, I want you to do this. So it’s what you want the person to do. By the time they started here, arriving at your website with a problem at the very bottom, the bottom is what you want them to do, and that’s going to be your call to action. All right. So let’s go over to the computer now and I’m going to show you an example of this in practice.

So here’s the page that I created, which is the problem, agitation, solution, landing page and basically it’s for my ideal customer workbook.

So I start off with here. So because I’ve already got a Web site, the header part, the heros section, the banner, the top part which I was demonstrating that tells people who you are, what you do and how you serve them I”m replacing it with “are you attracting the right leads and customers”. Then I give them a scenario.

Imagine sitting in your home office looking at your schedule and seeing it completely full. But as you skim down the page, you can feel your body slumping down and your shoulders feeling heavy. There isn’t one person that’s on your list you enjoy working with. Do these types of clients sound familiar? Problem. Scroll down. So the mismatch I outline what a mismatch customer is. The complainer, the freebie seeker. But look at the pictures. I mean, these are.

not my ideal customers, which is who I’m not attracting, but it makes a point that, OK, you have people like this in your circle that are looking for free information, the ones that always complain that, you know, they’re not getting any results. But they refused to do the work, the one that you want to do business with you, but they’re not your person. OK, so that’s the problem. Scroll down the agitation.

So here’s a picture of a woman who looks really frustrated. Are you frustrated? Are you exhausted? Are you spinning your wheels? Just jabbing it in just a little bit more.

But, hey, you know what?

I may have a solution for you. What if you turn this around and I have some text here and it starts with who you want as your ideal customer, what does this mean? I have a button here that scrolls down to basically the solution to make connection, loyalty, save time and money, easier to create better products and services, clear messaging and buying power. OK, so remember in that those bullet points that I laid out and then my call to action, a woman here who looks happy, ready to build your ideal customer profile to help figure this out.

There’s my text, call to action, give me the worksheets. So this is a working example of how I use a problem, agitation, solution, method to create that landing page to teach people how to build their ideal customer profile.

I laid out the problem. I agitate it and offering them a solution, all without the person spending a dime. So this is a way to build authority, to get people to know how I work, the type of information I can give them without even making an investment.

They are making an investment, though. They’re making an investment in their time. So what you want to do is when you create a page like this, if you’re using it for an Opt-in, where you’re giving away a freebie, give them something that’s valuable. Don’t give them something that’s just a piece of crap that you put together because you have to give them something, put something together that’s valuable. And for what that is, you need to know who your ideal customer is, what problems are having, and then you take a small piece, offer them a solution so they get to know more about you, like what you do.

They start to trust what you have to say, which then in the end makes it easier for them to buy from you. So if you’re stuck on this part, you know, you’ve got your paper, you’ve got white page syndrome, you’re not sure where to go from here. If you’re stuck, you’re usually overthinking it, remember? The header. And you’ve got a section, section, a section and a call to action. Who you are, what you do and how you serve, you can put information about problems

people are having, your ideal customer. Why are they even on your page? What are they expecting to look for? Lay that out. How can you help them? Lay that out then, at the end what you want them to do? So they’re arriving your website not knowing. And by the time they get to the end, they’re going to know who you are, what to do, how you serve them, how you’re addressing your problem and what you have to offer them.

So if you’re stuck, let me know and comment below just what you’re stuck on, and then I’ll be glad to give you a hand alrighty. So until I see you in the next video, stay inspired.

So in this video, you’re going to learn how to plan a layout for a single-page website. Now, why a single-page website?

[00:00:11.780]
It’s helpful because you can use them as landing pages to focus on one product or if you’re just starting out or you may not have a product or service to sell yet. [00:09:54.410]

[00:10:18.290]
but they’ve identified themselves as one of the three problems, you’ve emphasized that problem. So you’re agitated a bit.

[00:10:24.250]
Now let’s get into the solution so we can come in here and we can make it as bullet points, try to make them as bullet points to create that nice white space. I don’t know if this is even.

[00:10:35.860]
OK, so that’s going to be your solution, so it could be something like learn to plan your website in seven days, how to Learn Tech the Easy Way, how to build your own website for under 50 dollars. You know, solutions for that. So they start off with a problem. And as you’re coming down, you’re providing the idea for the solution for them.

[00:11:00.840]
Then when they’re saying, yeah, I can learn that I have seven days, I can build a website without having to know all the tech. I can build a website without knowing programming. You know, I could build a website or web page in, you know, three hours.

[00:11:16.260]
Yeah, I want to learn how to do that.

[00:11:18.910]
The next part is your call to action. So we’re going to pretend here that with this is that I provide one on one training.

[00:11:26.700]
So with this here, I can build an Opt-in page for the first name email. And then I just got marker all over me. The button and then under there, a little sentence. I have to say, what they’re going what’s going to happen after the Opt-in for this? So it could be here, your Opt-in you want to build your mailing list? Could be.

[00:11:53.110]
Well, for how you probably got here was learn how to plan your website in 8 easy steps by taking my free mini course, just give me your first name, email and click the button.

[00:12:04.390]
Then the text here could say after you click submit, a confirmation is going to go to your email to make sure I’m sending this to the right email address, whatever, whatever that that tag line is.

[00:12:16.150]
But there’s a layout.

[00:12:17.740]
So there’s a layout for a very simple one page website to basically start building your authority, to teach people this is who I am, what I do and how I serve. These are the problems that you might be having. And you’re going to know these problems because you have an ideal customer profile you’re basing that on. You’re going to agitate that problem even more. Again, based on your ideal customer profile, you’re going to provide your solution. Then you’re going to tell these people, hey, I’ve got this, I’m going to give you for free, give me your contact info.

[00:12:50.920]
And that’s great. What if you want to put it a little bit more, let’s say you’re just really just starting out.

[00:12:57.430]
Well, you know what’s missing on here, who you are. So you can turn around and say, OK, this is where the whiteboard comes in.

[00:13:05.830]
You can turn around and say, well, let’s change this a little bit and I’m actually going to show you a sample of this one page, one page landing page, actually on the website. So you can turn around and then now without doing it on the whiteboard, you can actually just shift these around.

[00:13:29.380]
So in the training that I have is that it shows you if you create this and then you want to add something in here. Well, on the whiteboard, we have to erase it. But in reality, all we do is take that and drag it out. Just move it down to the next section just to swap the pieces out. So that’s how easy it is. So you can make a section now. For, let’s say, laying it out, we can actually just create a background image or we can put an image here, you know, we could put something here and then about, you could say, why work with me?

[00:14:07.930]
Why should you work with me?

[00:14:09.190]
You know, just basic a basic paragraph of how you can help this person.

[00:14:15.100]
And then you put the Opt-in here and make sure you put your buttons in a different color. And then we have our little statement, what’s going to happen after you click the submit button?

[00:14:31.620]
OK, so you can build that as basically as big as you want. Now, I want to show you a quick example of some layouts that I’ve done on paper.

[00:14:41.040]
So here’s some layouts and they’re all folded up because they’re massively long. So what I’ve done…It’s just a short one. I just take biner paper and put them together, that I taped them together to come up with a layout, that I take this layout and transform it into a landing page. So you can do it on paper.

[00:15:04.380]
You don’t have to get fancy.

[00:15:06.030]
You don’t need to do anything on, you know, Illustrator or Photoshop. You can use Canva. But, you know, to me, I really like doing it on paper. So here’s a really long one. OK, that’s a really, really long one, and you can use this as well for sales pages, regular landing pages, your one-page website.

[00:15:31.310]
You can, you know, use this for a product as well so you can layout the problem here, here, here. And you really should have an Opt-in to build a mailing list on your pages. But this could be “buy now”.

[00:15:46.280]
Take this course, contact me. So the very bottom is going to be, I want you to do this. So it’s what you want the person to do. By the time they started here, arriving at your website with a problem at the very bottom, the bottom is what you want them to do, and that’s going to be your call to action. All right. So let’s go over to the computer now and I’m going to show you an example of this in practice.

[00:16:12.560]
So here’s the page that I created, which is the problem, agitation, solution, landing page and basically it’s for my ideal customer workbook.

[00:16:22.970]
So I start off with here. So because I’ve already got a Web site, the header part, the heros section, the banner, the top part which I was demonstrating that tells people who you are, what you do and how you serve them I”m replacing it with “are you attracting the right leads and customers”. Then I give them a scenario.

[00:16:44.480]
Imagine sitting in your home office looking at your schedule and seeing it completely full. But as you skim down the page, you can feel your body slumping down and your shoulders feeling heavy. There isn’t one person that’s on your list you enjoy working with. Do these types of clients sound familiar? Problem. Scroll down. So the mismatch I outline what a mismatch customer is. The complainer, the freebie seeker. But look at the pictures. I mean, these are.

[00:17:11.690]
not my ideal customers, which is who I’m not attracting, but it makes a point that, OK, you have people like this in your circle that are looking for free information, the ones that always complain that, you know, they’re not getting any results. But they refused to do the work, the one that you want to do business with you, but they’re not your person. OK, so that’s the problem. Scroll down the agitation.

[00:17:35.840]
So here’s a picture of a woman who looks really frustrated. Are you frustrated? Are you exhausted? Are you spinning your wheels? Just jabbing it in just a little bit more.

[00:17:45.620]
But, hey, you know what?

[00:17:47.510]
I may have a solution for you. What if you turn this around and I have some text here and it starts with who you want as your ideal customer, what does this mean? I have a button here that scrolls down to basically the solution to make connection, loyalty, save time and money, easier to create better products and services, clear messaging and buying power. OK, so remember in that those bullet points that I laid out and then my call to action, a woman here who looks happy, ready to build your ideal customer profile to help figure this out.

[00:18:19.880]
There’s my text, call to action, give me the worksheets. So this is a working example of how I use a problem, agitation, solution, method to create that landing page to teach people how to build their ideal customer profile.

[00:18:33.110]
I laid out the problem. I agitate it and offering them a solution, all without the person spending a dime. So this is a way to build authority, to get people to know how I work, the type of information I can give them without even making an investment.

[00:18:48.290]
They are making an investment, though. They’re making an investment in their time. So what you want to do is when you create a page like this, if you’re using it for an Opt-in, where you’re giving away a freebie, give them something that’s valuable. Don’t give them something that’s just a piece of crap that you put together because you have to give them something, put something together that’s valuable. And for what that is, you need to know who your ideal customer is, what problems are having, and then you take a small piece, offer them a solution so they get to know more about you, like what you do.

[00:19:18.950]
They start to trust what you have to say, which then in the end makes it easier for them to buy from you. So if you’re stuck on this part, you know, you’ve got your paper, you’ve got white page syndrome, you’re not sure where to go from here. If you’re stuck, you’re usually overthinking it, remember? The header. And you’ve got a section, section, a section and a call to action. Who you are, what you do and how you serve, you can put information about problems

[00:19:48.230]
people are having, your ideal customer.

[00:20:07.490]
So if you’re stuck, let me know and comment below just what you’re stuck on, and then I’ll be glad to give you a hand alrighty. So until I see you in the next video, stay inspired.
